Talk show host Oprah Winfrey has described the day she gave away a fleet of cars to the audience of her show as "one of the happiest days" of her life. The giveaway, which took place on 9 September 2004, saw the presenter hand out 276 cars live on air. At the time it was estimated to have cost more than $7m. Speaking to People magazine to mark the publication’s 50th anniversary, Winfrey said she remembered every moment of the event, despite it taking place more than two decades ago. The episode has become a viral internet meme.
